“there is power in looking”

critical spectatorship and the deconstruction of violent gaze regimes

Wednesday, 09.04.2025, 16.00 Uhr bis 20:00 Uhr Wiener-Philharmoniker-Gasse 2, 5020 Salzburg, Österreich Veranstalter: Afro-Asiatisches Institut Salzburg

What are our respective politics of looking? How does gaze relate to power, positionality and supremacy?

When actively engaging with spectatorship, what do we learn and understand about familiarity, bearing witness and (guilty) pleasures of looking? How can we decipher and deconstruct racist and colonial gaze regimes and critically recode our relationships to looking. A shared endeavor in self-reflection and rehearsal of critical spectatorship.

This is a continuing education initiative by Decolonizing Salzburg and D—Arts in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Salzburg, which aims to raise awareness of colonial and discriminatory continuities, promote a reflective approach to them and strengthen sensitivities.
