As a transcontinental area, the Mediterranean has been strongly characterized by intercultural influences for thousands of years. Caponata, a traditional dish from Sicily, for example, is strongly influenced by Arabic cuisine; it combines eggplants from India, tomatoes from America and green olives and capers  from the region. During the world dinner, we want to focus on intercultural aspects of the past and present. Concerning the present, we'll take a closer look at tomato production and trade in Italy. We will discuss why Italy aquires tomatoes from China, how the Italian fruit is harvested under terrible conditions and how initiatives are engagine for solidary and ecological ways of production and consumption. Italian biologist Valentina Todisco will guide us through this culinary evening, during which we will prepare a delicious caponata a.o. together.
