Veranstalter: Afro-Asiatisches Institut Salzburg

In this workshop, we will together try to reconstruct more than three hundred years of African presence. Particular emphasis will be given to student migration.

The first African students came to Styria in the year 1837 in order to study the production of iron. Under which circumstances did they arrive, how did they make their living in this country which must have appeared strange to them?  Which sources tell us about their fate?

In this workshop, we will together try to reconstruct more than three hundred years of African presence. Particular emphasis will be given to student migration. We look at similarities and differences of life situations in the past compared with the situations in which people of African origin find themselves in Salzburg today.

Generally, #blacklivesmatter introduced a renewed interest in history among activists. Could this workshop possibly become a starting point for young Africans to reflect on Black histories in Salzburg - their owns and those of their predecessors?
