POSTPONED TO FEBRUARY 7th, 2024!

Too many Indigenous Communities and People around the world have not yet received the appropriate apologies, reparations, and restitution to which they are entitled.

They are still socially and structurally discriminated in many places. Deprived not only of their land and environment but also far too often of their language and culture, many of them struggle for their rights. In mainstream societies, dressing up as Native Americans is still commonplace at carnivals, festivals and parties. This practice mostly reproduces stereotypes without reflection and is a form of cultural appropriation. Rarely have the wearers of these costumes seriously addressed the concerns of Indigenous People, taken care of their values, expressed solidarity with them, or supported them. Therefore, the use of Indigenous People's clothes as costumes is under great criticism. With the help of representations of real painful events in the history of Indigenous Societies, and the underlining of discriminatory continuities, we would like to deal with the rights of Indigenous People in the context of this theme evening. Further, we like to promote a sensitized attitude towards the situation of Indigenous People and show ways of serious allyship.

At 6 pm the psychologist, educator, writer and filmmaker Red Haircrow will make a talk about "Indian" Is Not A Costume. We invite the audience to discuss the topic with Red Haircrow after his talk.

Those who want to learn about Red Haircrow's work before that evening can browse his site: https://redhaircrow.com/about/

At 8 pm the screening ofTwice Colonized will take place. The documentary accompanies the renowned Greenlandic Inuit lawyer and activist Aaju Peter who defends the human rights of Indigenous Peoples of the Arctic. Here you find the trailer.
