Discover the unifying power of Noah's/Nuh's sweet, Aşure/Anushabur, a dessert that unites traditions and communities in the Middle East and Caucasus.

When the Flood was over and land was in sight again, Noah is said to have prepared a dessert with the food left on the ark. This dessert is still called Noah's sweet, aşure or anuschabur, and is made from grain, dried and fresh fruit and spices. It is a traditional dessert from the Balkans and Western Asia, as well as the Caucasus, and is even cooked by various religious communities. Armenians prepare their anushabur at Christmas time. The dish is also popular with Turkish Jews. Alevis and Sunni Muslims call the 10th day of the month of Muharram ‘Ashura’. On this day, the difficult times of the prophets are remembered and ashurah is eaten. Unfortunately, there are still ongoing historical conflicts between these communities. At this world dinner, we would like to use the aforementioned dessert and a short piano interlude to show that there is a great deal that connects the different societies of the Balkans and West Asia in everyday life. Whether Armenian, Jewish, Alevi or Sunni Muslim.
